Baby development during the 1st month is a very trying and yet joyous time for any new parent. It is completely understandable that one would feel lost or nervous about the sleepless night and the countless issues that they would face.
Yet it need not be so. All that is really needed is keen observation of your little loved one and understand the basic fundamentals of baby development. One thing that may or may not be apparent is the baby Physical and Cognitive Development during the first month
During this phase of baby development. It is important to note that your baby's brain is experiencing a huge growth spurt. Do take note of your interaction with your baby by talking and touching. During this development phase, your baby's focal distance is about 30cm to 50cm. Try to move within this distance when talking to her. It will help her to focus on your facial features. It is also at this stage that babies are very sensitive to sounds. When soothing the baby to sleep, try humming some favorite tunes, call out his/her name often and they will so learn to recognize your voice and take comfort in them.
You should start to see some personality taking taking shape within the 2nd week. Pay attention to certain cues that your baby would be giving you, such as coos, or certain sounds that indicate that they have soiled their diapers. It would be good to take note of the stools as well as umbilical cord. It should start to heal very well through the 2nd week, most of the time, it drops off in the mid-week. When it falls of, take note of the belly button, It would slightly reddish in color but the wound site should have healed completely. The redness would go away within a few hours. If there is slight streaks of blood, do not panic. Just keep the area dry and clean and it should clot up. Leave it as it is until the scab drops off. However, if bleeding persist, consult your pediatrician immediately.
In the first month you might notice small white spots commonly found on the babies nose. These are known as milia or better known as baby acne. Please do not try to squeeze them as you would in teenagers! These are just white heads that will go away on its own within the next couple of months. You would want to protect your baby's face with socks and mitten to prevent them from scratching their faces. Babies at this stage are alert for shot periods of times (e.g 15-30mins). They are able to responds to their mothers face. Sometimes when you swaddle the baby, you would notice that the baby "startles" spontaneously, this is a common occurrence which is known as moro reflex. Nothing to worry about.
